Bellwood man charged for stealing guns from local hardware store

A 20-year-old Bellwood man has been charged after he allegedly broke into a local hardware store in June and stole multiple guns.

According to a probable-cause affidavit, Seth Baney broke into Tanner’s Hardware & Building Supplies in Bellwood Borough between 1 and 3 a.m. June 19.

A glass door at the store had been broken and police recovered blood evidence from the scene.

During an interview with Bellwood police in September, Baney allegedly denied breaking into the store, but claimed he heard a juvenile was the culprit.

In a later interview Baney confessed to police that he broke into the store and stole multiple handguns and a rifle, according to the affidavit.

He also allegedly told police that a juvenile may have been at the scene.

Baney claimed that after the break-in he took the guns back to his home and gave them to a juvenile friend a day or two later, according to the affidavit.

Baney has been charged with six second-degree felony counts of theft by unlawful taking, second-degree felony burglary, second-degree felony criminal trespass, six third-degree felony counts of firearms not to be carried without a license and third-degree misdemeanor criminal mischief.

He was arraigned Tuesday before District Judge Fred B. Miller, of Tyrone, and was sent to the Blair County Prison in lieu of a $30,000 bond.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Oct. 31 before Miller.
