Maddow was born Rachel Anne Maddow, one of two children of Elaine (née Gosse) and Robert B. Maddow on April 1, 1973 in Castro Valley, California. Maddow later went on to do her postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar and earned a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) in Politics in 2001.

Rachel Maddow is openly gay. The charismatic TV show host was gay as a freshman at Stanford University a few decades ago. She did so in an interview with the student newspaper along with a friend, Saydeah Howard, also coming out at the same time. The interview became famous at the time under the motto “The only two gay freshmen on campus”.
It was reported that Maddow had initially revealed her sexual orientation in her dorm through a public letter posted in the toilet stalls after hearing some homophobic comments. After receiving positive feedback and encouragement from other students for her audacity to publicly embrace who she was, she announced it to the entire school. In the interview, Maddow revealed that she’s had positive romantic relationships with men in the past, but that didn’t change much about who she really was.
Maddow further revealed that her parents didn’t know about her sexual orientation before the interview ended and only found out after an anonymous person sent the article to them. Her “very Catholic” parents were ashamed of their daughter at the time, but have since come to be very supportive of her choice.

Rachel Maddow is not married but has been in a long-term relationship with artist and photographer Susan Mikula. The couple met in 1998 when Mikula Maddow, who was then working on her doctoral thesis on AIDS policy, hired to work on her 2-acre farmhouse in Berkshires, western Massachusetts.
The couple is said to have hit it off immediatelyAfter a year and a half, they moved in together. Maddow and Mikula currently share a West Village apartment in New York City and usually visit the farmhouse on weekends.
Susan Mikula, who was born sometime in 1958 in New Jersey, USA, is a self-taught photographer known for her use of vintage Polaroid cameras. Her work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions across the United States. Most recently, she was engaged by the Art in Embassies program to work at the US Consulate in Mexico. She has also published a number of books compiling her works.
