Students, Teachers Don PJs in Primrose Fundraiser

SOMERS, N.Y. -- The halls of Primrose School were like human kaleidoscopes on Thursday evening, as hundreds of pajama-clad children milled about, having their faces painted, munching on cookies and filtering off into classrooms where teachers, also sporting pajamas, were reading bedtime stories.

It was another Primrose Playground fundraiser and almost everyone was dressed up - or down - for the occasion. Principal Katie Winter, in her red polka dot pajamas, pink robe and hot pink fuzzy slippers, reported that it was a triumphant event.

“We sold the last tickets first thing Thursday morning. We had to turn people away,” Winter said. Attendance was limited to 600 places.

After story time the crowd gathered in the cafeteria, where they responded to the rhythms and songs of SIS Principal John Griffiths, accompanied by the Baloney Brothers Band and by professional children’s entertainer, Kurt Gallagher

Donna Ouimette, parent of second grader, Laurel, said, “The kids have been really excited for a couple of weeks. They’re having cookies and milk for dinner tonight.” Laurel added, “I saw all three of my teachers in pajamas.”

Josie Stoner said of her first grade daughter, Grace, loved that her teacher was painting her face.

“Seeing their teachers in pajamas and coming back to school in the dark was a lot of fun for them,” Stoner said.

In between events, a silent auction sponsored by the PattyCass Foundation offered prizes including a week in lacrosse camp, a personal dinner cooked by Chef Timmons, golf lessons with Andy Lask, jewelry, a wine basket and more.

Kindergarten teacher Beth Maliniak, wearing penguin pajamas, explained that most Primrose students have already gotten to see her in her pajamas.

“I wear them when we study the letter P,” Maliniak said. “And we make pancakes. So it’s not such a big deal. But tonight the older kids are excited because it brings back memories of learning the letter P.”
